Als Military Christian Fellowship (MCF) staan wij nauw in contact met MCF’s in de landen om ons heen. Eén van de MCF’s waar wij veel contact mee hebben is de Britse Armed Forces Christian Union (AFCU). AFCU organiseert door het jaar heen vele evenementen, conferenties en programma’s. Hun nieuwste initiatief is ISSACHAR. Issachar is een mentortraject voor militaire leidinggevenden dat maar liefst 18 maanden duurt. Ik kreeg bijna twee jaar geleden een uitnodiging om deel te nemen aan dit programma door één van de bestuursleden die uiteindelijk zelf mijn mentor werd. Inmiddels is mijn traject ten einde gekomen en begint dit voorjaar het tweede seizoen.

Ik kijk met veel dankbaarheid terug op mijn Issachar traject. In februari 2024 werd ik uitgenodigd en een maand later zat ik in Engeland tijdens het ‘launch weekend’. Hier werd ik hartelijk ontvangen en opgehaald van het vliegveld. De exacte aantallen weet ik niet meer, maar we waren met een stuk of 20 ‘mentees’. De meesten waren Brits en enkelen waren internationals die tijdelijk in Engeland werkten of een opleiding volgden. Elke mentee kreeg een mentor die goed bij de mentee pastte. In dit eerste weekend spraken we uitgebreid over de doelen en de opzet van het traject en leerden we elkaar allemaal kennen. In de daarop volgende maanden sprak ik elke vier weken online een uur met mijn mentor. Het voornaamste doel voor mij was Christelijk militair leiderschap maar we spraken over alles. Elke worsteling, al was het privé of professioneel, mijn mentor sprak met mij, hielp mij en bad voor mij.

Daarnaast hadden we elke 6 weken een zoomsessie met een spreker, vaak een generaal buiten dienst, een kerkleider of een organisatieleider. Zij gaven hun visie of tips met betrekking tot het zijn van een Christen en leiding geven, zowel binnen als buiten Defensie. Aansluitend gingen we in groepjes uiteen met mentee’s en mentors om verder te praten over hoe we dit in de praktijk konden brengen.

Het tweede weekend kon ik helaas niet aansluiten, maar het derde en laatste weekend gelukkig wel: het ‘commissioning weekend’. In dit weekend wordt je met alles wat je geleerd hebt als het ware uitgezonden in de militaire organisatie als Christelijk leider. Ik heb me door dit hele traject heen enorm bemoedigd en gesterkt gevoeld door mijn mentor en heel de organisatie erachter, inclusief enkele bidders die wekelijks, dan wel dagelijks voor ons baden.

The Call to Issachar

The biblical tribe of Issachar was noted for having “understanding of the times and knowing what Israel should do” (1 Chronicles 12:32). For the Armed Forces Christian Union, this programme represents an intentional, 18-month journey towards discerning God’s will and acting decisively, taking participants on a path of spiritual clarity and purposeful action. This isn’t a quick fix, but a structured, long-term commitment designed to move you from spiritual survival to thriving discipleship.

The demands of service life: deployments, constant relocation, high operational tempo can often make it difficult to maintain spiritual consistency. Issachar 2 is uniquely tailored to integrate faith into the rhythm of military life, offering the structure and community essential for sustainable spiritual growth and leadership development. 

A Journey of Transformation

This intensive program takes participants in the military community on a journey of personal and spiritual development, focusing on two key pillars: Spiritual Transformation and Christian Leadership. Over 18 months, you will engage in a rich blend of practical and theological resources, supported by a dedicated community:

• Dedicated mentoring: Every participant will be paired with an experienced mentor for one-to-one guidance, prayer, and accountability. This personal relationship provides the bedrock of support and tailored development throughout the journey.
• Structured leadership development: We will host regular leadership talks and study sessions focusing on topics critical to a Christian in uniform: courage, integrity, moral decision-making, and servant leadership.
• Daily spiritual practices: The course provides structured, achievable daily practices designed to help you build lasting habits of prayer, Bible engagement, and reflection, integrating faith into your daily routine.

Issachar 2 offers the dedicated space and resources to deepen your theology, strengthen your spiritual disciplines, and empower you to lead with greater integrity and impact. Your spiritual strength is your greatest asset, and we believe that strong Christian service personnel are vital to the health and morale of the entire Armed Forces.
